Citizen Outreach Response and Education - The CORE

Fueled By Enthusiasm 3/22/2011

Momentum is stalled for the moment as we analyze new meeting spot possibilities and iron out bumps with our sponsored academic labs.  We continue to see enthusiasm building with interest in collaboration amongst staff at Montgomery College, and have begun other investigations into the idea of breaking out of academia into a communal labspace, such as many groups within the DIY-Bio framework have begun.

JCVI is considering foundation of a community wetlab within the Rockville space.  In the meantime, I have begun negotiations with NIH to provide us with equipment if we can find a dedicated space to link with a 501c status. These benefits will most likely be available to the other participating academic institutions, as well as any participating hackerspaces that have their official 501c  designations.

Phil from JCVI has posted a survey gauging interest in a Community Molecular Biology lab at
http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TB79QY6

This has me at a crossroads  of thought, about whether I should persue 501c designation for any of the work done direct with GenoBlasts. So far there has been no need, and if JCVI takes the lead on the community space there is really not much need for the moment. However, should we need a more accessible space for high school and hobbyist level access then maybe it would be best to persue and then begin looking for a centralized experiential space.

I would be interested in getting feedback from folks  to hear what they would like to see as far as future offerings. We'll know within the next 2 weeks whether there will still be an iGEM team once the registration date passes.

We hear about alot of alternative ideas in the world of competitive incentives through the DIY-Bio forum at Google Groups. So perhaps we can branch out to alternative foci from the BioBricks or simply order the smaller kit with particular parts to experiment with and run a few demos the spring with the new equipment we make.

People building community, building machines, building instruments, building genes, building proteins, building connections, building understanding, building literacy, building the future, together.
